La Défense is a privileged place for street skating. Benches, steps, stairs, handrails, ledges and other elements making up the business district are very popular with actions sports enthusiasts. Many riders come to practice at La Défense, a real open-air playground. Just in case, if you don’t know all elements you can find here our glossary.
Unfortunately, riding in the business district is becoming more and more complicated according to the riders. As soon as they start skating near a tower, the security guards come out to make them leave. They barely have time to do a trick. Other areas of the district are impassable because of the residents.
Despite all of this, the Defense district remains a mythical place where big competitions took place such as IMYTA. With over 1000 people in attendance on april 13, 2003, the second ever Paris IMYTA was the biggest street contest in the history of rollerblading. Crews from all over the world represented their deep love for blading. Coming from as far as Poland, Russia,Holland, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, Switzerland, England,Germany, Portugal, USA, the Czech Republic, and of course, France. You can see the IMYTA video here.
The last event I saw there was the SHRED DA GROUND 4 on June 4 2007. Here is the official video of the contest, filmed and mounted by Mr. Cavin Le Macon. It was crazy !
“The Defense district is a mythical place. It is a mecca for riders.”
